Amy Mims, Coach

Exec. Dir. Meeting Str. Schools, SC

Amy Mims is the Executive Director of Meeting Street Schools, a network of schools across the state of South Carolina whose mission is to fundamentally alter expectations for educators and students working in schools that serve under-resourced communities.

Mims attended College of Charleston and began her professional career serving students with special needs, and her commitment to education has been life-long. Her transformational work in the field has been based upon a strong belief that students are at the center of every decision made, every organizational action taken. As an instructional leader, Mims has spent her career engaged in successful reform efforts in schools from Charleston to Chicago. As a third-year principal, she attended The Breakthrough Coach training and brought the principles of this approach to her work, where it would remain a tenant of her leadership to this day.

Mims served as principal of two high-challenge schools, located in Charleston and Greenville districts and she largely attributes the success stories of those two schools to The Breakthrough Coach. Under her leadership, team efforts resulted in huge increases in student achievement, framed in an innovative, child-centered culture that impacted whole communities and formed a foundation for positive change. In 2008, Mims was recruited to join Chicago Public Schools as Deputy Chief of Curriculum and Instruction supporting 100 autonomous schools across the city. The following year, she was named Chief Area Officer of the largest geographic region (formerly Area One Schools) in Chicago, managing 30 schools serving over 25,000 students. She brought The Breakthrough Coach training to her principals to help them manage the work of instructional leadership. Her work there led to significant increases in student literacy in the primary grades and a statistically significant upward trend in both reading and math in grades 3-8.

Mims later served as Chief Academic Officer of Atlantic Research Partners, a Chicago-based educational firm providing professional development, technical assistance and strategic support for districts across the country.
