Assistant Superintendent at Lakeside Union School District in Lakeside, CA

Dr. Andy Johnsen is the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services in the Lakeside Union School District in Lakeside, California. His 20-year career as a teacher, principal and district administrator in both urban and suburban school systems has made him passionate about the potential impact that a building principal can have on student success.

Dr. Johnsen served as a teacher, program coordinator, assistant principal, principal and district office director overseeing charter schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District, working primarily with economically disadvantaged and English Learner students. As principal in the Poway Unified School district in north San Diego County, he led the district’s lowest performing school to achieve the highest test score gains in the school’s history. As Assistant Superintendent, Andy’s primary charge is building the leadership capacity of the district’s principals to implement instructional systems across the district’s elementary and middle schools.

Dr. Johnsen began working with TBC 10 years ago. TBC’s Management Methodology™ made it possible for him as a principal to spend two days or more per week in classrooms observing instruction, coaching teachers, and gathering observational data for future professional development activities. As a result, students at his last school posted the largest test score gains in the district over a two-year period in 2012 and 2013, and the school’s Academic Performance Index is the highest it has ever been (842). The school twice received the Title 1 Academic Achievement Award. He is a member of the International Coach Federation and has been trained to coach instructional leaders.

Andy Johnsen earned his B.A. from California State University, Long Beach, his M.S. in Educational Administration from Pepperdine University, and his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from UCLA.
